Course Assessment

Students are assessed through final speaking, listening, reading, writing and language in use examinations, in addition continuous assessment based on module tests, assignments and general classroom performance. Marks are awarded as follows:

  • Class Assessment - 10%
  • Module Tests - 20%
  • Final Exam - Speaking 10%
  • Final Exam - Language in Use: 20%
  • Final Exam - Reading: 15%
  • Final Exam - Writing 15%
  • Final Exam - Listening 10%

In order to pass the course students must achieve a final mark of over 60%, including at least 50% in each of the final examinations.

Please note that only those students who attend a minimum of 85% of the classes will be allowed to take the final exam.

The final examinations are based on the following areas taught:

Speaking: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and the ability to hold a conversation and convey meaning.

Language in Use: grammar and vocabulary used in context.

Reading: Skills include:

  • identifying meaning from context
  • skimming and scanning
  • reading for gist
  • reading for detail

Writing: Different forms of writing are taught and tested, including writing emails, letters, narratives, descriptions, comparisions and reports focussing on:

  • vocabulary use
  • spelling
  • grammatical accuracy
  • punctuation
  • paragraphing
  • coherence
  • cohesion

Listening: Skills taught include:

  • listening for gist
  • listening for details
